Semillita

Semillita is an examination of Latinidad as a first-generation-college student. Often called a “pocha,” or “race traitor” growing up, author Marísa Adame Grady uses poetry to explore the nuances of her
identity as Mexican-American within the confines of schools and family pressures where White Professionalism was seen as the top value. She speaks to teachers and professors who had low
expectations or assumed she couldn’t speak English and family members who have been trapped by the lie that one must forgo their heritage to be successful in academia. In short, this one’s for the “coconuts.”
